Go All-In with These 9 Fun Outdoor Activities in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, so it’s no surprise that there are plenty of fun activities in the city. But aside from the numerous casinos and shows, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors in and around the city. So whether you live in the Twin Lakes neighborhood or a West Las Vegas apartment, take advantage of these fun outdoor activities in Las Vegas.
1. Take in the unique landscapes at a national park near Las Vegas
While Vegas might be best known for its bright lights and nonstop entertainment, and you can also have fun away from the frenzy. Visiting a nearby national park and taking in some stunning outdoor views is a great outdoor activity in the Las Vegas area.
“Las Vegas has more national parks within a day’s drive than any other city in North America,” says Matthew Meier of MaxTour, a Las Vegas-based tourism site. “I highly recommend trying to see as many as possible on your next trip. Parks like Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Grand Canyon National park are world-class, and that doesn’t include tribal parks like Grand Canyon West, Antelope Canyon, or Monument Valley. A trip to nature can be the perfect break from the craziness of the Las Vegas Strip.”
2. Get some exercise while enjoying a tour of the city
A tour is a great way to get to know your new city. Why not get some extra exercise while you’re at it? A Vegas bike tour can be a great way to learn more about your new home while burning some calories.
“An exciting and enjoyable outdoor activity in Las Vegas is just a short drive away from the Strip and downtown casinos in Red Rock Canyon,” says Vegas resident Thomas Wilkinson of Vegas4Locals, “Ride at your own pace and visit the sights on an EZ Ride Electric Bike Self-guided Tour. Venture off on your own with friends and family riding the stunning hills and magnificent colored canyons on the outskirts of Las Vegas.”
3. Channel your inner cowboy with horseback riding
For a unique outdoor experience in Las Vegas that’ll remind you of the Wild West, enjoy a day of horseback riding just a few minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.
“As the weather cools to milder temperatures in Las Vegas, outdoor activity increases,” says Danica Stockton of Vegas Magazine. “Enjoy a rejuvenating sunrise and fresh air while horseback riding through the desert for a two-hour trail ride. Cowboy Trail Rides and Wild West Horseback Adventures offer hot breakfast with morning rides or a hot dinner after sunset trail rides to refuel. Desert trail horseback riding is suitable for couples, families, and friends seeking an outdoor adventure.”
4. Revel in the local art scene
Vegas is an excellent place for art enthusiasts as well. The city’s Arts District is a great place to take in local art while enjoying other aspects of downtown Las Vegas.
“One of my favorite outdoor activities for those living in Las Vegas is exploring the Arts District, which is full of funky shops, art galleries, and cool restaurants and bars,” says local photographer Pam Fields. As you stroll through this neat little neighborhood, be sure to check out the numerous murals and artistic displays on the buildings. A “must do” in the Art District is catching First Friday. It’s Las Vegas’ only monthly arts & cultural event and recently celebrated its 20th year. First Friday showcases local artists, musicians, food trucks, and makers. It’s a great way to get outdoors, enjoy some fresh air, and support local artists.
5. Enjoy plenty of outdoor activities at the Red Rock Conservation Area
Matthew Kammeyer of Las Vegas-based Five Star Property Management recommends visiting the Red Rock Conservation Area for an outdoor activity in Las Vegas that offers stunning views of the Mojave Desert.
“Las Vegas is rich in activities,” he says. “There is always something to do from one end of the valley to the other. For those looking for adventure, try exploring the Red Rock Conservation area. Red Rock is famous for its hiking, rock climbing, cycling, horseback riding, and exploring. Neighboring areas offer even more.”
6. Take in the vibes at the Red Rock Drum Circle
For a more relaxing outdoor activity in the area, you can visit the Red Rock Drum Circle on weekends.
“Las Vegas is a city full of casinos, good eats, and pool parties that are out of this world. But, for those of you looking for an eclectic adventure full of music and the best vibes, check out the Red Rock Drum Circle,” says travel blogger Lenzee Gillette of ThruHerLenz. “Every Sunday, people of all ages head out to the South Oak Creek Trailhead at Red Rock Canyon, where they gather to play music, play their favorite instruments, sing & dance! Bring your own instrument, or just come ready to express yourself. You’ll enjoy the rhythm of the beats all while surrounded by some of the greatest outdoor views in Las Vegas.”
7. Take on one of the area’s mountain biking trails
Mountain biking is a great outdoor activity for those looking to enjoy fantastic views while getting some exercise, and the Las Vegas area has no shortage of trails to choose from.
“Las Vegas is an underrated destination for outdoor recreation, including epic mountain biking,” says Las Vegas local Holly Ann Priest of Peaks & Pedals Gear Exchange. “The valley boasts over 600 miles of single track and has something for every level of rider. Plus, you may be treated to a lovely view of Red Rocks, Lake Mead, or even the strip.”
8. Get on the water for some fishing at Lake Mead
With constant sunshine and warm weather year-round, there’s no such thing as a bad time for fishing in the Las Vegas area. Located just east of the city, Lake Mead is best known for its striped bass, but you catch a wide variety of fish there.
“Everyone thinks of Las Vegas as a place to let loose, party, and gamble; not everyone realizes the beautiful nature we have to offer,” says local realtor Randy Hatada of Xpand Realty Las Vegas. “My personal favorite activity is taking my son fishing at Lake Mead. Anytime we have free time, you’ll always catch us there with our fishing pools and a snack or two. It’s always great to get some fresh air and father-son time.”
9. Check out local restaurants and outdoor sporting events
According to Las Vegas local Adrian Frankfurter of Nicklin Property Management, the Las Vegas area has plenty of delicious dining options. You can grab a meal at a restaurant and then catch a baseball game in the city for a day of food and outdoor fun.
“One thing is certain: Las Vegas is the epicenter of year-round sunshine and near-perfect weather,” he says. “Take advantage of the great outdoors while enjoying a robust variety of upscale restaurants and shops that cater to nearly all tastes and interests at Downtown Summerlin. If sports interest you, you’ll enjoy catching the Las Vegas Aviators, our local Triple-A baseball team, at the ultra-modern Las Vegas Ballpark.”
